About This Resource

Today, the metaverse infrastructure is still developing. Researchers, educators and IT managers have a chance to lead the way. To leverage the potential of the metaverse, we first need to understand what it is, what it could be and how schools and students can safely navigate a digitally immersive future.

In this fast-paced 'Inspire Session', participants will get a taste of what the metaverse is, how it will affect schools and what technologies we can incorporate into our lessons right now. To do this we will explore three key concepts:

  • Teaching at the Dawn of the Metaverse: Here we will explore the metaverse technologies that are available to schools today. Participants will see first-hand how using deepfake tools can support students with their learning, they will also have the opportunity to experience some of the AR/VR solutions that they can deploy at school.
  • Preparing for the Coming Years: Taking inspiration from David Thornburg’s work in, ‘From the campfire to the Holodeck’ we will examine the role that classroom design plays in amplifying the impact of technology. We will also raise the ethical and legislative challenges that schools will need to overcome as immersive technologies such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home begin to enter learning spaces.
  • Looking over the Horizon: The session will conclude by identifying future trends in hybrid teaching and how integrated AI Cameras will replace Zoom lessons in the near future while we slowly move towards teaching via holoportation.
